* 15% discount student rates offered only with valid academic student i.d. We will contact you to obtain verification in advance of the workshop. On the first day, (Friday evening), participants will observe a 3+ hour live painting demonstration and discussion by Robinson. This is the introductory part of the workshop, and will also be open to the general public (see ticketing below). On the second day, participants will engage in observational painting from a still-life setup, honing their skills in capturing the interplay of light and shadow on inanimate objects. The third day shifts focus to working from a live nude model, providing an opportunity to study the nuances of light on the human form. Throughout the workshop, you'll explore art historical precedents, participate in non-objective color exercises, and analyze works by a curated selection of artists through lectures and hands-on painting sessions. These experiences aim to equip you with a new perspective on painting, integrating insights gained into your own artistic practice. Whether you're an experienced artist or just beginning your journey in observational painting, this workshop offers valuable tools to enhance your appreciation and application of light and color in your work.

Emil Robinson received his master of fine arts degree from the University of Cincinnati in 2006 and his bachelor of arts from Centre College in Danville Kentucky in 2003. He has taught as a professor of art and design for almost twenty years. In 2007 he received a grant from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation which allowed him to spend six months painting in London. In 2009, he was a prize winner in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Recently Emil has been chosen for solo exhibitions in London and the Taft Museum of Art here in Cincinnati. In December of 2024 Emil's painting became the winner of the 15th annual Manifest Prize, a significant international competition. He is the first Cincinnatian to receive this award. Robinson maintains his own studio in Cincinnati, Ohio and exhibits his paintings widely. This workshop will address some of the same questions he wrestles with in his own work.
